Alameda County, which was organized in 1853, is the 7th largest county in the State of California with a population of 1.457 million per the 2006 census. It lies next to the San Francisco Bay on the west, and the Berkeley Hill to the north. Alameda County also is home to the Livermore Valley which has over 45 wineries and was the original "wine country" in the late 1880's and early 1900's.
Oakland is the county seat, and the Oakland A's, Oakland Raiders, and Golden Gate Warriors all call Alameda County their home.
